Windows XP Services - Computer Browser Service?

What is Computer Browser Service?

Browser service or Computer Browser Service is a feature of Microsoft Windows to let users easily browse and locate shared resources in neighboring computers. This is done by aggregating the information in a single computer 'Browse Master' (or 'Master Browser'). All other computers contact this computer for information and display in the Network Neighborhood window.

Microsoft Definition

Maintains an updated list of computers on the network and supplies this list to computers designated as browsers. If this service is stopped, this list will not be updated or maintained. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

Importance of Computer Browser Service
  • Collects the names of NetBIOS resources on the network, creating a list so that it can participate as a master browser or basic browser.

  • This maintains list of resources (computers) displayed in Network Neighborhood and Server Manager. If disabled you can still map drives, but can't browse the whole network.

Default Status: Automatic
Recommended: Automatic - If your connected to a LAN
Recommended: Manual/Disabled - If it is a stand-alone system

There is tool named as Digeus Registry Cleaner I recommend to use this software when there are problems with operational system. I also recommend to use Windows Tune Up Suite form Windsty. It repairs and maintains computer health.
